In a move that blends innovation with cultural heritage, SPILL, the Black-owned app founded by former Twitter/X employees, has launched SPILL Spades just in time for Juneteenth. This new feature pays homage to the card game that has long been a staple in Black culture, elevating a century-old tradition to a new digital era. Alphonzo Terrell, Co-Founder and CEO of SPILL, recently announced this exciting addition on LinkedIn.

“Spades holds a revered place in Black culture, serving as a staple at family gatherings, cookouts, and holiday celebrations, creating lasting memories and strengthening bonds,” Terrell shared. Recognizing the game’s profound impact, SPILL has integrated Spades into its platform, ensuring that the tradition continues to thrive in a modern, connected world.

SPILL Spades is designed to cater to players of all skill levels with three distinct modes:

  1. Practice Mode: For those who have never had the chance to learn Spades or need a refresher, Practice Mode offers a comprehensive tutorial. Led by Clint Coley, the host and creator of the World Series of Spades tournament, this mode provides a “judgement-free” environment where players can learn at their own pace and sharpen their skills.
  2. Private Mode: This mode allows users to recreate the intimate experience of playing Spades with friends and family. Players can create private games, invite their loved ones, and enjoy secure, exclusive gaming sessions that capture the personal touch of traditional Spades games.
  3. Public Mode: For a more dynamic experience, Public Mode lets users play with or against the broader SPILL community. This mode features built-in chat functionality and the option to “go live” with audio and video, providing an immersive and interactive experience. Players can invite friends both on and off SPILL to join and witness their triumphs in real-time.

“This feature is a labor of love, meticulously crafted in response to feedback and requests since our app’s inception nearly a year ago,” Terrell noted. “Ultimately, our vision is to be a platform that not only entertains but also celebrates and preserves the rich cultural practices that have brought communities together for generations.”

The launch of SPILL Spades aligns with the celebration of Juneteenth, a holiday that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, and is a time of gathering. SPILL aims to ensure the legacy of this tradition endures in the digital age.

Terrell expressed his gratitude to the team, backers, and SPILL community members who have supported this vision. “Cheers to our team, our backers and all the incredible members of SPILL who continue to support us as we advance our vision to be the safest, most rewarding and most enjoyable place to build community.”

This Juneteenth, SPILL invites everyone to join in the celebration and experience the joy of Spades in a whole new way.
