In the small town of Marianna, Arkansas lies a culinary gem that has withstood the test of time and earned a place in the hearts of many barbecue enthusiasts. Jones Bar-B-Q Diner, a humble establishment known for its delectable sandwiches, is perhaps the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Arkansas and the South owned by a Black family, according to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas. The diner’s rich history and unwavering commitment to quality have made it a beloved institution both locally and globally.

The exact opening date of Jones Bar-B-Q Diner remains uncertain, but according to historical accounts, the restaurant has been serving its signature barbecue since the 1910s. Walter Jones, the first owner and pitmaster, originally operated the restaurant under the name “The Hole in the Wall” in downtown Marianna. In 1964, the establishment moved to its current location and adopted the name Jones (or Jones’) Bar-B-Q Diner. Today, the pitmaster is James Harold Jones, who continues to uphold the family’s legacy of barbecue excellence.

Jones Bar-B-Q Diner offers a simple yet iconic menu, featuring only chopped pork, available by the pound or as a sandwich, with or without slaw. The sandwiches are a delightful combination of finely chopped, tender pork topped with a slightly sweet and tangy vinegar-based red sauce, and a light mustard-based slaw, all layered between two slices of Sunbeam white bread. The restaurant’s unpretentious setting—one small room lined with cinderblocks and adorned with old photographs, Arkansas memorabilia, and newspaper clippings—adds to its charm and authenticity.

The diner’s reputation for outstanding barbecue has attracted visitors from around the world. In 2012, Jones Bar-B-Q Diner became the first establishment in Arkansas to receive the prestigious James Beard Award, recognized as an “American Classic” by the James Beard Foundation. This accolade celebrates the diner’s dedication to preserving traditional barbecue techniques and honoring its heritage. In 2017, the restaurant was further honored with induction into the Arkansas Food Hall of Fame.

Jones Bar-B-Q Diner operates on a unique schedule, closing whenever the meat runs out, often by 11:00 a.m. on busy days. According to reports, eager customers frequently line up as early as 7:00 a.m. to ensure they can savor the diner’s renowned barbecue.

The restaurant faced a challenging moment on February 28, 2021, when a fire broke out, damaging the pit area. However, the resilient spirit of James Harold Jones and the community’s support enabled the diner to rebuild. On July 14, 2021, Jones Bar-B-Q Diner celebrated its grand reopening, and in October of that year, it was featured on the New York Times Restaurant List, further solidifying its status as a culinary icon.

Jones Bar-B-Q Diner’s story is a testament to the enduring legacy of Black-owned businesses and the rich cultural heritage they bring to the American culinary landscape. The diner continues to be a beacon of tradition, excellence, and community in Marianna and beyond. As noted by the James Beard Foundation, the diner’s commitment to quality and respect for heritage make it a true American classic.
