“Do you remember the 21st night of September?” Well, Walt Disney World has given guests of EPCOT a reason to never forget!

On September 12th, the official Disney Parks Instagram account made a special announcement that thrilled both Disney and music fans alike. Today, on September 21st, visitors to EPCOT’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind will be treated to a one-of-a-kind experience—Earth, Wind & Fire’s iconic hit, “September,” will be the only song played on the ride all day long. This celebration marks one of two unofficial “holidays” in Black music this month, the first being on September 3rd, which is dedicated to The Temptations’ legendary track, “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.”

What Is Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind?

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, located at EPCOT, is one of Disney’s most innovative and immersive attractions. Opened in May 2022, it combines state-of-the-art technology with an epic storyline that plunges riders into the universe of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. The ride is a first-of-its-kind for Disney World, being both a fully enclosed roller coaster and a storytelling experience that features reverse launches, large-scale projections, and a groundbreaking ride system that allows vehicles to rotate 360 degrees.

Set in the fictional Wonders of Xandar Pavilion within EPCOT, Cosmic Rewind invites guests to help the Guardians save the galaxy from certain destruction. Along the way, riders encounter familiar characters like Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket, and Groot, while zipping through space on a wild, gravity-defying adventure.

One of the most unique features of this coaster is its use of music to elevate the experience. True to the spirit of the Guardians films, which are known for their retro soundtracks, Cosmic Rewind offers a randomized playlist of six classic hits from the 1970s and 1980s that sync perfectly with the ride’s twists, turns, and dives.

How the Music Works on Cosmic Rewind

On a regular day, Cosmic Rewind’s soundtrack is randomized, meaning each time you board, you don’t know which song you’ll get. The six-song playlist includes:

  • “September” – Earth, Wind & Fire
  • “Disco Inferno” – The Trammps
  • “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” – Tears for Fears
  • “One Way or Another” – Blondie
  • “I Ran” – A Flock of Seagulls
  • “Conga” – Gloria Estefan

Each song brings a different feel to the ride, making every experience slightly different based on which track is playing. The music not only enhances the action but also adds a layer of fun nostalgia, transporting riders back to the golden age of these iconic tunes.

But today, on September 21st, the ride’s usual randomization takes a pause. In celebration of the famous Earth, Wind & Fire song and its cultural significance, every ride will feature “September” on repeat, giving riders the ultimate feel-good soundtrack for their cosmic journey. The song’s infectious energy, combined with the thrill of the ride, promises an unforgettable experience.

The Importance of “September” in Music History

Released in 1978, “September” quickly became one of Earth, Wind & Fire’s most beloved songs, symbolizing joy, unity, and celebration. Over four decades later, the song continues to be a staple at parties, weddings, and now, Disney theme parks. Its enduring appeal makes it the perfect anthem for today’s special ride experience.

For visitors to EPCOT today, this tribute offers a unique chance to ride Cosmic Rewind with “September” providing the soundtrack every time. It’s a beautiful nod to both the legacy of Black music and the role that Earth, Wind & Fire has played in shaping the cultural landscape.

So, if you’re at EPCOT today, make sure to experience this rare moment. The Guardians may be saving the galaxy, but it’s “September” that will have you dancing through space.
