As we enter February and the official start of Black History Month, Google has kicked off the month-long celebration with a tribute to an iconic genre that has influenced music across the globe: House music. The Google Doodle honors the legendary Black musicians who laid the foundation for House music in Chicago’s vibrant clubs during the late 1970s and early 1980s. This celebration is highlighted with an animated music video set to Marshall Jefferson’s 1986 anthem, “ Move Your Body”, a track that became a defining sound of the genre.
From Chicago’s Streets to Global Dance Floors
House music was born out of the spirit of reinvention, emerging in the wake of the disco era’s decline. Chicago’s Black community led the charge, creating an electrifying sound that was part rhythm, part revolution. This genre is often linked to the infamous club The Warehouse, where pioneering DJs like Frankie Knuckles spun tracks that would change the course of music history. Marshall Jefferson’s iconic “ Move Your Body” became an anthem, a song that’s still revered by dance music fans around the world.
Today, House music continues to influence global electronic and dance music. From its beginnings as a genre for Chicago’s marginalized communities to its current status as a staple in nightclubs around the world, its impact cannot be overstated.
A Word from DJ Kelly G
Google’s tribute is a deep dive into the roots and cultural significance of house music. DJ Kelly G, a Chicago-native DJ and producer, notes the digital storytelling mastery involved in creating this Doodle. “The Google Doodle feels like a perfectly mixed Chicago House track—layered, nuanced, and full of Easter eggs that reveal themselves with each replay,” he says. “It’s a celebration of how a local, raw sound became a global movement.”
This February, as we move to the beat of “ Move Your Body”, we honor the genre that continues to make us feel at home on the dance floor—House music, born in Chicago, loved worldwide.
