Will Smith is back—and he’s pulling no punches.
The Oscar-winning actor and Grammy-winning hip-hop icon just released the video for “INT. BARBERSHOP – DAY,” the lead single from his new album BASED ON A TRUE STORY. The song, featuring longtime collaborator DJ Jazzy Jeff and comedian B. Simone, dropped a few days ago, but the visual—released yesterday—is already making waves for its raw, theatrical concept—and even rawer lyrics.
Set inside a buzzing barbershop filled with gossip, hot takes, and cultural commentary, the song plays out like a cipher of criticisms, comebacks, and unapologetic confessions. The first few seconds alone dive headfirst into the noise:
“Will Smith is canceled—oh, you can’t cancel Will… He walking around like he all invincible or somebody…”
The chatter mimics the kind of conversations we’ve all heard (or had) since that Oscars night. What unfolds is a layered, scripted verbal sparring session about Will’s career, controversies, fatherhood, marriage, legacy, and Black celebrity.
According to Associated Press, Smith previewed the project at a private listening party in Los Angeles, where he told attendees the new album is his way of reclaiming his narrative after a tumultuous few years. BASED ON A TRUE STORY is his first full-length music project in over 18 years.
In “INT. BARBERSHOP – DAY,” each barbershop voice feels like a different slice of public opinion. It’s messy, funny, contradictory—and very human. One second he’s the Fresh Prince. The next, he’s being clowned for his haircut. The next, he’s being hailed as the first rapper to win a Grammy. Then questioned about his relationship with Jada. Then told his music doesn’t hit. It’s the culture in conversation with itself, with Will front and center.
There’s also the undeniable nostalgia of hearing DJ Jazzy Jeff in the mix, blending old-school flavor with new-school commentary. B. Simone adds to the chaos with her trademark punchy delivery, playing one of the many voices trying to decide: Is Will canceled or is he a king?
In the end, the music video fades out with a pointed but playful question: “Come in, Mr. Smith… would you like to sit down?”
With this release, Smith makes it clear that he’s not hiding. He’s walking straight into the barbershop banter with a smirk, a beat, and a story to tell.
“INT. BARBERSHOP – DAY” is available now on YouTube. BASED ON A TRUE STORY is streaming everywhere.
