For over a century, Harlem’s Apollo Theater and D.C.’s Howard Theatre have operated as parallel universes of Black excellence. They were the crown jewels of the “Chitlin’ Circuit,” providing a sanctuary and a spotlight for icons like Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown, and Marvin Gaye when the rest of the world tried to dim their lights.

Now, for the first time in their storied histories, these two powerhouses are officially co-presenting a stage. The Best of the Apollo is coming to the Howard Theatre on Sunday, April 26, 2026, and it’s slated to be a family reunion of epic proportions.

Bridging the Gap: Harlem to D.C.

While artists have ping-ponged between 125th Street and the Shaw neighborhood for decades, this marks the first time the institutions have joined forces as official partners.

“The Apollo and the Howard have long shared artists, audiences, and a cultural lineage,” says Michelle Ebanks, President & CEO of the Apollo. “This marks our first official co-presentation, a meaningful step in deepening the ties between Harlem and Washington, D.C.”

The sentiment is echoed by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, who noted that hosting this collaboration in the heart of Shaw honors the legacy of “Black Broadway” and the neighborhood’s role in shaping our nation’s artistic heritage.

What to Expect

While the performance lineup is currently under wraps, we do know the night will be steered by the hilarious Chris Spencer. As a comedian and actor who knows exactly how to handle a high-energy crowd, Spencer is the perfect bridge for an evening that promises to honor the “Amateur Night” legacy while showcasing the next generation of superstars.

“When you bring those stages together, you know something unforgettable is about to happen,” Spencer stated. “This is a night you won’t want to miss.”
