Celebrated annually on the third Friday of August, Men’s Grooming Day is typically framed around the mechanics of masculine upkeep—surface-level advice on beard oils, razor burn prevention, or quick-fix barbering tips. Within Black American culture, grooming has never been merely mechanical. I recognize that the daily ritual at the bathroom mirror is an act of quiet restoration, a declaration of self-worth, and a vital, non-negotiable pillar of emotional wellness.
For Black men, looking good and smelling good are direct catalysts for feeling good. In a world that rarely grants Black men the grace or space to be soft, intentional, or gentle with themselves, personal care becomes an arsenal for self-confidence. It is a daily grounding mechanism. When a man feels fully present and comfortable in his own skin, that grounded energy radiates outward, elevating his community, his home, and his peace of mind. Taking time at the sink is an act of self-preservation.
From S-Curls to Custom Oils
Grooming as wellness is a heritage passed down through observation and touch. I grew up witnessing this heritage firsthand. I remember watching my father carefully shave his face, meticulously touch up his S-Curl, or prepare for his weekly pilgrimage to the local barbershop when he wore a sharp fade. The barbershop was a place for dialogue, community, and self-care.

Now, as an adult, I watch that generational torch continue to burn in my own home. I watch my partner, Greg, commit to his daily skin and beard routines with unhurried care. More importantly, I watch my sons begin to cultivate their own distinct relationships with personal care.
Watching the boys carve out their individual preferences has been one of the most rewarding aspects of parenthood. Their tastes are already surprisingly sharp and hyper-specific. They’re not materialistic kids, but they’ve scoffed at my homemade oils because they already value the quality, locally crafted products they’re used to. Recently, Greg and I had custom-scented favors made for a family celebration, and the leftover bottles have become high-stakes real estate in our house—with my oldest son actively plotting on how to claim them as his own.

What makes this dynamic so special is how it creates a bridge of connection between Greg and the boys. Navigating a blended household requires subtlety and grace. Grooming, scent sharing, and trading product tips give them a natural, pressure-free way to bond as men without encroaching on traditional father-son milestones they’ll share with their dad. It’s a shared language of pride and autonomy that lets everyone show up as their truest selves.
Hair Days, Fragrance Notes, and Home Energy
In our household, care is tactile. Hair days are a sacred communal event that brings the tempo of the house to a gentle, focused rhythm. On any given weekend, someone’s scalp needs greasing, someone needs a thorough detangling session, and someone else is deciding how to style their hair for the week ahead.
There is an undeniable intimacy in these quiet moments of touch—finishing a fresh set of plaits, helping Greg detangle his hair, or simply honoring the time that deep moisturization requires. These acts are physical expressions of love, care, and safety within our four walls.

That intentionality naturally extends into how we navigate fragrance. Scent is a silent, subtle language between partners. There is something profoundly satisfying about being with a partner who pays attention to those details—a man who will comfortably wear a fragrance with pink pepper notes simply because it complements and aligns with the scent profile I’m wearing that day. It creates an invisible, harmonious link between us before we even step out the door.
Of course, we cannot talk about Black men’s grooming without honoring the unmistakable, magnetic shift that comes with a fresh haircut. The “fresh cut effect” isn’t a myth. When the boys walk out of the barber or loctician’s chair looking sharp, they step into the world as the most confident versions of themselves.
Reclaiming the Lane: The Rise of TONE and Modern Creator Culture
Historically, mainstream retail aisles have excluded Black men from the narrative of luxury, fragrance, and holistic self-care. However, a cultural shift is happening, driven by a new generation of Black creatives who refuse to sit on the sidelines of industries that profit off their influence.
Seeing young Black men take ownership behind self-care and grooming brands changes the narrative entirely. Consider TONE, a fragrance-first personal care brand co-founded by Nathaniel Weiss alongside the powerhouse members of the AMP creator collective—Kai Cenat, Duke Dennis, Fanum, Agent 00, ChrisNxtDoor, and ImDavisss.
When modern Black creators step into the product development space, they dismantle the outdated notion that high-effort grooming is a hidden chore or something to be compartmentalized. They make washing, moisturizing, and scent layering feel aspirational, culturally authentic, and undeniably cool. It builds an accessible lane for older teens and young men to also take visible pride in how they present themselves to the world.
Essential Additions to the Modern Lineup

For the men looking to refine their daily routine or elevate their scent profile, TONE delivers accessible, elevated personal care rooted in confidence and natural ingredients. It leaves behind a soft, comfortable finish and a long-lasting scent that feels elevated without overwhelming the room.
2. TONE Pocket Size Cologne & Body Mist – Discovery Set ($20)
Designed for maximum versatility and daily discovery, this travel-ready set features four pocket-sized sprays: Coconut, Fresh, Vanilla, and Woodland. Built in compact, durable spray bottles, it allows men to explore scent layering or switch up their vibe on the go—whether slipping a bottle into a gym bag, desk drawer, or jacket pocket to transition seamlessly from the workday to the evening.
The Mirror as a Sanctuary
At its core, grooming is about taking control of a private moment in a loud world. It is about standing in front of the mirror, breathing deeply, and setting the tone for how you intend to occupy space.
This Men’s Grooming Day, we encourage the Black men in our lives—and the women who love them—to honor that space. Take the extra ten minutes at the sink. Invest in the moisturizing process. Experiment with complimentary scents. Take pride in the texture of your hair and the health of your skin. You have earned every single second of that quiet, restorative care.
