This Memorial Day, as we honor the brave men and women who died serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, a heartwarming story emerges from the magic of Disney. The upcoming ride, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, set to open at Walt Disney World Resort on June 28th, pays a special tribute to veterans, particularly African American service members, according to Disney Parks Blog.

Disney has a long history of celebrating military service, and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure takes this tradition a step further. Inspired by the fact that Tiana’s father, James, was a World War I veteran, Walt Disney Imagineering crafted an expanded backstory for him, honoring veterans and their families.

James’ story holds particular significance. Imagineers used real photos of soldiers from the 369th Regiment, one of the first African American regiments to serve in World War I, as inspiration. These soldiers faced not only the horrors of war but also the challenges of racial segregation at home. Their bravery and resilience is just one example of the dedication of Black service members throughout American history.

Charita Carter, project lead and executive creative producer for Walt Disney Imagineering, understands this significance deeply. As the daughter of a career Air Force officer, she brings a personal touch to the project.

“Growing up in a military family is a wonderful and challenging experience,” Carter says. “In this expanded story, you’ll see just how much Tiana is proud of her father and his military service. Just like so many of the families who visit us are proud of their military heroes.”

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is a celebration of diversity. Tiana, the first Black Disney princess–and one of only two North American princesses–serves as a powerful symbol for young visitors, particularly Black children, who can see themselves reflected in a character who honors her family’s legacy of service.

As we remember the fallen, let’s also celebrate the ongoing contributions of veterans and their families. Disney’s Tiana’s Bayou Adventure serves as a beautiful reminder of the sacrifices made, the pride felt, and American heroism.
