On December 20th, Tyler Perry brings a remarkable true story to the screen with his new film, Six Triple Eight, premiering on Netflix. This compelling drama shines a light on the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-Black, all-female unit deployed overseas during World War II.

While the world focused on the battles raging on the front lines, these 855 women fought a different kind of war. As Netflix shares, they were stationed in Europe and faced the daunting task of sorting through a staggering 17 million pieces of undelivered mail – a three-year backlog that had severely impacted troop morale. Their motto? “No mail, low morale.”
Perry’s film, inspired by a 2019 article in WWII History Magazine and his personal connection with late battalion member Lena Derriecott King, captures the incredible challenges these women overcame. Beyond the logistical hurdles of sorting mountains of mail with limited resources, they faced discrimination and segregation, battling prejudice while serving their country.
Six Triple Eight not only highlights the unit’s remarkable achievement – clearing the mail backlog in just 90 days, half the allotted time – but also delves into the personal stories of these unsung heroes. Led by Captain Charity Adams, portrayed by Kerry Washington, these women demonstrated resilience, ingenuity, and unwavering dedication in the face of adversity.
The film features a star-studded ensemble cast, including Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, and appearances by Susan Sarandon, Sam Waterston, and Oprah Winfrey. With original music by Diane Warren and choreography by Debbie Allen, Six Triple Eight is set to be to be a moving tribute to the women who served their country with distinction, despite facing prejudice and inequality.
