Disney Entertainment Television (DET) is once again opening its doors to emerging and diverse television writers through its highly selective DET Writing Program, according to an announcement on the program’s website. With the goal of staffing these talented writers on DET scripted series, the program offers a unique opportunity for mentorship, professional development, and unprecedented access to industry insiders.

Established in 1990, the DET Writing Program has earned a reputation as one of the entertainment industry’s most successful initiatives of its kind. It has been instrumental in launching the careers of numerous established and award-winning writers, producers, and showrunners, including Saladin Patterson, Raamla Mohammed, Peter Saji, Zahir McGhee, Dailyn Rodriguez, Luvh Rakhe, Sierra Ornelas, and Claudia Foriestri, among many others.

What sets the DET Writing Program apart is its commitment to diversity and inclusivity. Each year, the program aims to provide opportunities for writers from underrepresented backgrounds, ensuring that the stories being told reflect the rich tapestry of human experiences. This commitment is further underscored by the establishment of the Eunetta T. Boone Comedy Writers Scholarship and the FX John Singleton Scholarship, which offer special staffing consideration on Disney Branded Television and FX Networks series, respectively.

For aspiring writers, the DET Writing Program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare them for the rigors of television writing. Participants spend the first few months engaging in professional development activities, including the development, writing, and polishing of at least one original pilot script to be used as a staffing sample. Additionally, writers have the opportunity to network with executives, producers, and credentialed writers, laying the foundation for future collaborations and career growth.

The application process for the DET Writing Program is now open, with a deadline of Friday, June 7, 2024. Applicants must be able to legally work in the United States and be at least twenty-one years of age by December 1, 2024. While entertainment industry experience is not required, it is strongly recommended. Applicants are required to submit an online application and submissions package, including original pilot scripts, a resume outlining relevant experience, and personal essays that convey their unique perspectives and multicultural sensibilities.

In addition to the standard application materials, writers have the option to apply for the Eunetta T. Boone Comedy Writers Scholarship or the FX John Singleton Scholarship, each requiring a separate pitch outlining their connection to the respective honoree’s legacy and their suitability for the scholarship.

The DET Writing Program represents an unparalleled opportunity for emerging writers to break into the television industry and make their mark on the world of entertainment. With a track record of 100% staffing rate each year and a commitment to diversity and inclusivity, the program is poised to shape the future of television for years to come.
