As the summer sun beams down and the open road calls, there’s a new soundtrack destined to elevate your journeys. Two years after the release of his critically acclaimed sophomore album “Wanderlust,” singer, songwriter, and producer Durand Bernarr has just released his highly anticipated EP, “En Route”–and we’re officially hailing it the quintessential summer 2024 soundtrack.
“En Route,” more than just an EP; is a musical journey designed for Bernarr’s devoted fanbase, affectionately known as his “cousins and the congregation.” The EP and its accompanying short film serve as a bridge from the explorations of “Wanderlust” to new, uncharted territories, offering a soundtrack that captures the essence of adventure and the thrill of the open road.
“En Route is the by-product of my experiences and evolution as both a person and an artist. It’s me expressing exactly how I feel, what I need and how I want to be treated,” said Durand Bernarr in a statement shared with I Love Us. “While narrating these stories, I wanted to incorporate the eras, genres, cultures, instruments, and music legends that inspire me.”
We were already in love with the first two singles, “Unknown” and “Fist Bump.” “Unknown” speaks to the relatable anxiety of waiting for a potential lover to make a move despite the fear of what could go wrong. On the other hand, “Fist Bump” hilariously chronicles the woes of friends and acquaintances getting makeup on your pristine outfit, striking a chord with anyone who has ever faced this all-too-familiar situation.
The EP continues this theme of everyday exchanges and road trip vibes with cleverly titled tracks that only Durand Bernarr could pull off. “GPS” will have you clutching your pearls as you uncover the double entendre hidden in the lyrics, while “Must Be Nice” is set to become an anthem for those who refuse to let haters rain on their parade. With lyrics like “I hear what you’re saying and I agree. Yes, it’s nice, indubitably,” Bernarr crafts a perfect response to negativity, a well-received message already evidenced with Infinity Song’s “Hater’s Anthem.”
Another standout track, “Processing,” feels like it could resonate deeply with the Black neurodivergent community. The song speaks to the necessity of taking time to process thoughts and feelings, providing a much-needed anthem for those who understand the importance of mental and emotional space.
Of course, our “Favorite cousin on our Daddy’s side” would help us kick off summer, Pride month, and Black Music Month in this way. The “En Route” EP is a must-have for your playlist. Listen below!
