If you haven’t heard, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park has kicked off a special celebration for the 30th anniversary of The Lion King, according to a recent post on Disney Parks Blog. From now until September 6, fans of the original animated film can enjoy character greetings, themed food and drinks, unique merchandise items, and other special “only at Disney” surprises.

A Cultural Touchstone for the Black Community

While “The Lion King” is an animated cartoon devoid of human depictions, it holds a special place in the hearts of many in the Black community. This is largely due to its stellar voice cast, which includes notable Black actors like Jason Weaver, Whoopi Goldberg, James Earl Jones, and Madge Sinclair. The film’s cultural significance is deepened by the presence of Jones and Sinclair, who also portrayed a royal couple in the classic film Coming to America.

Character Encounters and Immersive Experiences

During the 30th anniversary celebration, guests can meet their favorite characters, Timon and Rafiki, at Conservation Station at Rafiki’s Planet Watch. Accessible by train from the exit of Kilimanjaro Safaris, this special area also offers the Animation Experience, where fans can learn to draw other beloved characters from “The Lion King.”

A Culinary Journey Inspired by ‘The Lion King’

The celebration also features an array of limited-time culinary delights inspired by characters from the film. Highlights include the big (and adorable) Simba Paw Cookie available at outdoor food carts throughout the park and the You Follow Old Rafiki Cheesecake at Tiffins Restaurant. This dessert combines passion fruit mango cheesecake with a coconut-lime crust, vanilla bean chantilly, and a chocolate medallion.

For those seeking a refreshing beverage, Rafiki’s Squash Banana shake, made with squash bananas, baobab fruit, vanilla, cinnamon, and cardamom, is a must-try. At Eight Spoon Cafe, guests can enjoy the Simba slushy, a mango-flavored treat topped with grenadine and gummy candies, while the Zazu Ice Cream Sandwich at Tamu Tamu Refreshments features vanilla ice cream between blue cake-coated sugar cookies.

Exclusive Merchandise and Nostalgic Collectibles

To commemorate the anniversary, Disney has introduced a special merchandise collection perfect for fans attending “The Festival of the Lion King” show. The collection includes an adult sweatshirt featuring Simba silhouetted against the setting sun, a blue and white tie-dye youth zip hoodie, and a colorful “Hakuna Matata” ear headband. Additional items include a trendy fanny pack, a youth shirt and short set featuring Simba, Nala, Pumbaa, and Timon, and an adult yellow sweatshirt showcasing favorite characters.

Enhanced Experiences with MagicBand+

The celebration extends to “The Festival of the Lion King” show, where MagicBand+ technology adds an extra layer of magic. During key moments of the performance, guests’ MagicBands come to life with dancing lights and haptic vibrations, creating an immersive and unforgettable experience.

Whether through character encounters, delicious themed treats, or special merchandise, this summer celebration at the Walt Disney World Resort honors the enduring legacy of a film that has touched the hearts of millions.
