In awesome collaboration, Disney and Balmain have unveiled the Disney x Balmain: The Lion King collection, an array of ready-to-wear designs and accessories for both men and women. This unique collection, inspired by Africa’s artisanal traditions, celebrates a new generation of African talents and marks the first partnership between Disney and the historic French fashion house.
A Fusion of Fashion and Film
The collection is beautifully showcased in a short film directed by Femi Oladigbolu, shot in the breathtaking landscapes of South Africa. The film weaves together the collection’s designs, the incredible scenery, and the story of a Rousteing-led Balmain Army, composed of models from across Africa, journeying towards a joyous homecoming celebration. This visual masterpiece will be presented on July 5th at the “Lion King In Concert” event at London’s Royal Albert Hall, featuring the Chineke! Orchestra.
Celebrating “The Lion King” Legacy

Timed to honor the 30th anniversary of Disney’s Academy Award®-winning classic The Lion King and the upcoming release of Mufasa: The Lion King in December, the Disney x Balmain collection will be released globally on July 8th. Balmain’s Creative Director, Olivier Rousteing, and his team have infused the collection with signature Balmain silhouettes, impressive embellishments, and tailoring skills, reflecting the timeless themes and characters of The Lion King.
“Working on this collaboration was a dream come true,” says Rousteing. “The lessons I absorbed from The Lion King have remained with me for my entire life. This collection not only pays homage to Disney’s storytelling but also incorporates the brilliant creativity of African craft and artistry.”
Showcasing African Talent
This collaboration highlights a new generation of African artists. South African painter Nika Mtwana, Cameroonian painter Enfant Precoce, and South African painter Cassius Khumalo each contributed unique designs to the collection. These artists’ works have been adapted into colorful prints covering tees, tops, dresses, totes, coats, suits, and hoodies, blending traditional African elements with modern fashion.
A Personal Journey for Rousteing
Rousteing’s personal connection to Africa, discovered through his birth parents from Somalia and Ethiopia, has significantly influenced his work. “Returning to Africa to work on this film was an incredibly moving experience for me,” explains Rousteing. “It released the same wave of emotions I experienced when I first viewed The Lion King many years ago.”
