The Rookie gears up for its seventh season! Star Mekia Cox, who portrays Detective Nyla Harper, recently took to Instagram to share a glimpse of the first day back on set, and it’s all smiles.
The photo, which also features veteran cast member Richard T. Jones (Sergeant Wade Grey), showcases the excitement and camaraderie amongst the returning cast. Jones has been a mainstay on The Rookie since its inception, while Cox joined the show in season two, seamlessly filling the shoes left by Afton Williamson’s Thalia Bishop.

The Rookie has quickly become a fan favorite, striking a compelling balance between the adrenaline rush of police work and the complexities of real-world issues surrounding law enforcement. The show doesn’t shy away from depicting the tensions between officers and civilians, sparking conversations and challenging perspectives.
But The Rookie isn’t all seriousness. It offers a healthy dose of nostalgia for fans of 90s sitcoms and cinema, featuring Arjay Smith (best known for his role in “The Journey of Allen Strange”) and the ever-talented Michael Beach, who’s carved a niche for himself playing memorable bad husbands in several films.
For Richard T. Jones, “The Rookie” might also be considered a bit of a redemption arc. While audiences continue to hold a grudge for his character’s treatment of Sheila in the “Why Did I Get Married” franchise, here he’s portraying a dedicated and supportive Sergeant.
With a cast this seasoned and a willingness to tackle relevant social issues alongside pulse-pounding action, “The Rookie” promises another captivating season. Keep your eyes peeled for what’s sure to be a thrilling season seven!
