In an initiative announced on June 24, 2024, the U.S. Department of State unveiled its new Global Music Ambassadors, a diverse group of artists spanning various genres and generations. Among these notable figures is the Emmy® and Grammy® award-winning opera star, Denyce Graves, who has long been a revered figure in the world of classical music. As the founder of The Denyce Graves Foundation (DGF), Graves brings her profound talent and dedication to social justice to this prestigious role.

Lyor Cohen, Global Head of Music at YouTube/Google, and Leslie Miller, Vice President of YouTube Public Policy, emphasized the importance of this initiative. “Music has the ability to transcend borders and bring people together,” they stated. “Through this partnership, we aim to amplify the voices of artists and use music to drive positive change in communities around the globe.”

Denyce Graves, celebrated for her rich, mezzo-soprano voice and compelling performances, joins an illustrious cohort of ambassadors that includes Chuck D, Herbie Hancock, and Kane Brown, among others. Graves’ role as an ambassador is not just a testament to her musical prowess but also to her unwavering commitment to social justice and education.

As the founder of The Denyce Graves Foundation, Graves has been instrumental in expanding the public’s understanding of the multicultural history of classical music. DGF collaborates with prominent institutions such as The Smithsonian Institution, The Metropolitan Opera, and The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to highlight the contributions of trailblazing musicians, composers, and educators of color.

DGF’s mission aligns with the goals of the Global Music Diplomacy Initiative. Through community engagement programs, concerts, the creation of new works of art, and young artist development training, the foundation provides crucial opportunities for emerging artists. Graves’ work ensures that all singers, particularly those from underrepresented communities, have the resources and support they need to develop their talents and build fulfilling careers.

Graves’ appointment as a Global Music Ambassador emphasizes the importance of representation and equity in the arts. Her foundation’s efforts to bring the stories of America’s hidden musical figures to light resonate deeply with the initiative’s focus on using music to bridge cultural divides and promote social inclusion.
