The Amon Carter Museum of American Art has a special treat for us this fall! For the first time, they’re showcasing a unique collection of lithographs by the legendary sculptor Richard Hunt. Known for his massive metal sculptures in public spaces across the country, Hunt’s works on paper are a hidden gem that show a new side of his artistic genius.

Richard Hunt was a pioneer in sculpture. He was the first Black sculptor to have a solo retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York back in 1971. His career spans seven decades and includes more than 160 large public sculptures. Hunt’s pieces often explore themes of growth and transformation, inspired by nature, industry, and the surreal.

The exhibition, Richard Hunt: From Paper to Metal, opens on October 12, 2024, and runs through March 2, 2025. It features twenty-five lithographs from Hunt’s time at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in 1965. These prints are displayed alongside Natural Form (1968), a newly acquired sculpture by Hunt that hasn’t been seen in public for over fifty years. This piece, made from welded steel, highlights Hunt’s unique blend of industrial and organic elements.

Visitors will get a rare look at Hunt’s creative process, seeing how his ideas on paper turned into his famous three-dimensional sculptures. Natural Form is a standout piece, crafted from a car bumper and other steel scraps, showcasing Hunt’s improvisational welding technique.

This exhibition not only honors Richard Hunt’s incredible contributions to American art but also celebrates his legacy after his recent passing. Andrew J. Walker, the Executive Director of the Carter, emphasizes the importance of this moment to celebrate and preserve Hunt’s work.
