At I Love Us, we celebrate the power of creativity and the arts, not just as a form of self-expression, but as a vital part of a child’s development. Recently, we had the pleasure of speaking with playwright Rickey Solomon, whose advised introducing children to the arts from a young age. Here are five ways to foster a love of the arts in your children.
1. Get into Storytelling
Storytelling is a great way to spark creativity and connect with culture. Choose books with Black characters or make up your own stories together. This helps kids use their imagination and learn about their heritage. Encourage them to write and share their own stories, and maybe even create little plays or skits to perform at home or in the community.
2. Explore Music and Dance
Music and dance are fun ways for kids to express themselves. Introduce them to different music styles, like jazz or hip-hop, and let them try out different moves. Go to live shows and join music or dance classes. Dancing to different tunes, learning about famous Black musicians, and taking local dance classes can help them enjoy and appreciate the arts.
3. Visit Cultural Spots
Museums, theaters, and art galleries are great places for artistic inspiration. Plan trips to places that feature Black artists and attend performances by Black creators. These visits give kids a chance to see different art forms and understand their cultural impact.
4. Encourage Art Creation
Let kids create their own art to boost their creativity. Provide art supplies and let them try drawing, painting, or crafting. Set up a special space for their projects and celebrate their work with mini-exhibitions at home. Joining art classes or community art projects can also be a fun way for them to learn and meet others.
5. Join Local Arts Communities
Being part of local arts groups can inspire kids. Look for community centers, youth programs, or after-school clubs that focus on arts. Encourage them to join drama clubs, music groups, or dance teams. Connecting with other kids who love the arts can build their confidence and passion.
Incorporating these practices into your daily routine offers Black children a meaningful introduction to the arts. Supporting their creative exploration enriches their personal growth and deepens their connection to their cultural heritage. Embrace these opportunities to nurture their talents, celebrate their achievements, and cultivate a lifelong love for the arts. Your active involvement and encouragement will have a lasting impact on their artistic journey and overall development.
