Marching bands at Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) are a cornerstone of Black American culture. Known for their electrifying performances that blend music, dance, and theatricality, these bands create an art form that has inspired generations. But their influence extends beyond entertainment. These bands are a source of pride and a symbol of the resilience and creativity that define the HBCU experience. They serve as ambassadors of their institutions, promoting the values of education, discipline, and community.
For a decade, the Pepsi National Battle of the Bands (NBOTB) has been a celebration of culture, history, and community, spotlighting the legacy of HBCUs through the powerful sounds of their marching bands. The 2024 NBOTB, themed “Celebrating Champions of Culture,” marks the 10th anniversary of this event, set to be an unforgettable weekend in Houston, Texas, from August 23-25, according to an announcement. This milestone reflects musical excellence of HBCU bands and their profound impact on Black culture.
A Decade of Cultural Celebration
The 2024 Pepsi National Battle of the Bands is a cultural phenomenon that has grown in significance over the past decade. Derek Webber, CEO of Webber Marketing and Executive Producer of NBOTB, captures the essence of this event perfectly: “Celebrating ten years of the National Battle of the Bands is a milestone that goes beyond music—it’s about the impact these bands have on their communities and the broader cultural landscape.”
The Lineup: A Showcase of Excellence

The performances are more than just a display of technical skill; they are a celebration of the creativity and passion that define HBCU marching bands.
Special Performances and Community Engagement
In addition to the high-energy performances from the participating bands, the 2024 NBOTB will feature a star-studded lineup of musical acts that will elevate the weekend to new heights. Grammy Award-winning rapper Lecrae will take the stage alongside the legendary Boosie Badazz and gospel sensation The Walls Group. These artists, will add their voices to the celebration, making this a truly unforgettable event.
But the NBOTB is not just about entertainment; it is also about giving back to the community. The weekend kicks off with the Emerging Experience Entrepreneurship Conference presented by JPMorgan Chase on Friday, August 23. This conference, held at The Deluxe Theatre, will provide aspiring entrepreneurs with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed in the business world, reflecting the NBOTB’s commitment to education and empowerment.
On Saturday, August 24, the community will come together for the Feeding the Homeless initiative, an opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need. This initiative, held at 2009 Congress Street in Houston, underscores the NBOTB’s dedication to community service and its role in uplifting the most vulnerable members of society.
The Grand Finale: A Day of Celebration
The weekend culminates on Sunday, August 25, with a series of events that celebrate the best of HBCU culture. The Fan Experience at NRG Center, held from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, will feature the HBCU STEM College and Career Fair, showcasing over 40 top HBCUs, colleges, and universities. This event offers students a unique opportunity to explore educational and career opportunities, with many institutions providing on-the-spot scholarships. It is a reflection of the NBOTB’s mission to enhance the exposure of HBCUs and support the next generation of leaders.
Following the Fan Experience, the main event—the 2024 Pepsi National Battle of the Bands—will take place at NRG Stadium. As the doors open at 2:30 PM CST and the show begins at 3:30 PM CST, attendees will be treated to a display of musical mastery that only HBCU bands can deliver. The anticipation and excitement are palpable as these bands prepare to take the field, each aiming to outshine the other with their performances.
A Legacy of Impact
The impact of the NBOTB extends far beyond the stadium. Since its inception, the event has generated over $1.7 million in scholarships for participating colleges and universities, providing critical financial support to students who might otherwise be unable to afford a college education. This investment in the future of Black students is one of the many ways the NBOTB gives back to the community and helps ensure that the legacy of HBCUs continues for generations to come.
The NBOTB also plays an important role in preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of HBCUs. These institutions have a long history of producing some of the most influential leaders, artists, and thinkers in Black America. By showcasing the talents of their marching bands, the NBOTB helps to keep this history alive and introduces it to new audiences.
Looking Ahead
As the Pepsi National Battle of the Bands celebrates its 10th anniversary, it is clear that this event has become much more than just a musical competition. It is a celebration of the culture, history, and resilience of HBCUs and the communities they serve. From the powerful performances of the marching bands to the inspiring messages of the guest artists, the 2024 NBOTB promises to be an unforgettable weekend that honors the past while looking toward the future.
