BET+ is set to premiere a spinoff of its hit series, Carl Weber’s The Family Business, transplanting the action to the heart of the Big Easy and offering viewers a potent dose of escapism and hope. Premiering January 23rd, the series looks into the complex world of the Duncan family’s New Orleans branch, exploring themes of loyalty, resilience, and the enduring power of family in the face of adversity.

According to Deadline, this spinoff shifts the spotlight to Big Shirley Duncan (Lela Rochon), the captivating owner of the famed nightclub, Midnight Blues, and her son, Marquis (Brandon T. Jackson). When their business and land become the targets of a ruthless power struggle, with corrupt politicians, developers, and crime bosses all vying for a piece of the pie, they call upon their New York relatives for support.

A New Generation Steps Up

While the original series, based on Carl Weber’s bestselling books, centered on the New York Duncans and their exotic car dealership front, this spinoff introduces a new generation of characters and a fresh perspective. Notably absent from the New Orleans scene will be patriarch L.C. Duncan, played by Ernie Hudson in the original series.

Instead, the spinoff showcases the strength and resourcefulness of Big Shirley and Marquis, who find themselves caught in a dangerous web of corruption. They must rely on their own instincts, as well as the support of their extended family, to protect their legacy and navigate the treacherous landscape of New Orleans’ underworld.

Familiar Faces and Rising Stars

Though L.C. Duncan won’t be making an appearance, fans of The Family Business can anticipate the return of some familiar faces. Curtis (Ben Stephens) and Lauryn Duncan (Nayirah Teshali), the highly skilled bounty hunter and security expert, are expected to bring their unique talents to the Big Easy, according to Deadline.

Adding to the excitement, Brandon T. Jackson, known for his performances in films like Percy Jackson, Fast & Furious, and Tooth Fairy, and TV shows like Mr. Robinson and BoJack Horseman, joins the cast as Marquis. Jackson’s own Instagram post offers a glimpse into the ensemble cast, tagging actors like Lela Rochon, Yvette Nicole Brown, David Banner, Quincy, Orlando Jones, and Pooch Hall, hinting at a dynamic mix of veteran actors and fresh talent.
