Cuffing season is here, and while chilly nights and cozy vibes might drive singles toward dating apps, the way Black Gen-Z approaches love and connection is anything but traditional. Thanks to insights from our friends at BLK, the world’s largest dating app for the Black community, we’ve learned this year’s dating trends are deeply influenced by Black culture, arts, and entertainment. These shifts highlight a generation that values creativity, collaboration, and intentionality in relationships.

Love Meets Creativity
Black artists, creatives, and cultural hubs are at the heart of how Gen-Z singles on BLK are reshaping the dating landscape. Jonathan Kirkland, BLK’s head of brand and marketing, shared with I Love Us, “Art and creative expression are at the core of how Gen-Z communicates and builds relationships. This generation doesn’t just want to connect—they want to collaborate, co-create, and share experiences that feel authentic and meaningful.”
This sentiment comes alive through trends like Collabor-dating, where singles team up to create TikToks, curate playlists, or even design a joint photo dump. “Creative expression becomes a shared language,” Kirkland shares, “allowing users to showcase their individuality while fostering a connection over shared passions.
Black Artists Inspire Relationship Dynamics
The influence of Black musicians, artists, and creators is undeniable in shaping how Gen-Z connects. BLK’s identified “Freak Matching” trend draws inspiration from Tinashe’s viral TikTok track, “Nasty,” encouraging singles to embrace their quirks and find partners who match their unique energy. Whether it’s romantic, sexual, or just vibing, this trend celebrates individuality and encourages unapologetic authenticity.
“Beyond Tinashe, artists like SZA, who channels vulnerability and emotional depth in her music, inspire trends like Slow Dating, encouraging users to take their time and focus on intentional connections,” Kirkland says. Black creatives normalize the exploration of identity, individuality, and self-expression, setting the tone for Gen-Z singles to do the same in their dating lives.
Dopamine Dates
When it comes to sparking joy, Black-owned festivals and events provide the perfect backdrop for Dopamine Dates, one of BLK’s most exciting 2025 trends. These aren’t your average “dinner and a movie” dates. Think of shared experiences that ignite chemistry and build memories, like dancing at Afropunk, admiring visual art at an indie gallery, or sharing laughs at a Black film screening.
“Festivals like Afropunk, music showcases, and indie art galleries provide immersive, culturally rich environments where singles can connect over shared experiences,” Kirkland notes. These spaces naturally align with Gen-Z’s love for unconventional dates, offering an environment that feels vibrant and connected to Black culture. Whether it’s a spontaneous trip to a street art exhibit or a curated night at a jazz bar, Dopamine Dates encourage couples to bond through shared adventures.
Finding “Hobby Homies” in Black Creative Spaces
For Gen-Z singles who want their relationships to grow naturally, Hobby Homies is the go-to trend. The concept connects people through shared interests, making Black arts and entertainment venues ideal meeting spots. From cooking classes inspired by Black chefs to photography meetups in culturally significant neighborhoods, the possibilities for finding someone who shares your passions are endless.
Kirkland points out, “Black creatives, from musicians to visual artists to designers, set the tone for self-expression, individuality, and authenticity—all values that resonate deeply with Gen-Z.” These shared experiences build bonds that don’t feel forced, allowing relationships to grow organically.
Soft Life Standards
For Gen-Z women on BLK, dating is about elevating their lives. Inspired by influencers like Jayda Wayda and artists like Chlöe and Coco Jones, Soft Life Standards reflect a desire for partners who bring intentional acts of love and luxury into their relationships. Celebrating gestures like surprise vacations, thoughtful gifts, or creating a sense of ease in everyday life, this trend celebrates the kind of love that feels indulgent and affirming.
Kirkland explains, “The unapologetic luxury of artists like Jayda Wayda drives trends like these. Gen-Z is looking for partners who celebrate them and lift them up, making life feel effortless and elevated.” For Black singles who embody the “soft life,” the influence of luxury Black creatives has made it clear that settling is no longer an option.
Black-Owned Spaces: A Hub for Offline Connection
In an increasingly digital world, Gen-Z singles are rediscovering the value of unplugging with Offline Only, another key trend identified by BLK. Black-owned spaces, like music festivals, art showcases, and indie theaters, provide an escape from the swipe culture, allowing singles to engage face-to-face.
“As we move into 2025, we anticipate partnering with more Black-owned events and spaces to help our users build relationships that are deeply rooted in culture, creativity, and shared passions,” Kirkland says. These venues offer the kind of intentional, meaningful connections that apps can only start but can’t fully replicate.
Cuffing Season, But Make It Black Art
Cuffing season might be a universal experience, but for Black singles, it’s also a celebration of culture, creativity, and individuality. The trends shaping 2025 on BLK reflect a generation of singles who are looking for partnerships that align with their passions and values. From creating TikToks on a Collabor-date to vibing at a Black indie film screening, these trends show that Black arts and entertainment aren’t just backdrops for love stories—they’re part of the story itself. This cuffing season, Black love is finding new ways to thrive through creativity, collaboration, and unapologetic joy.
