Over the weekend, while attending the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Basketball Tournament in Baltimore, I Love Us writers were introduced to the brilliant minds behind HBCUWeekNOW—a media platform dedicated to celebrating the legacy and cultural impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Operating primarily as a YouTube channel under the production umbrella of Maryland Public Television, HBCUWeekNOW is committed to amplifying the voices of Black students, scholars, and alumni through compelling television and digital media. With a mission to honor the scholastic excellence and historical significance of HBCUs, the platform delivers a range of weekly videos, documentaries, and panel discussions that educate and engage audiences.

Elevating Black Excellence in Higher Education

From groundbreaking research to personal triumphs, HBCUWeekNOW shines a well-deserved spotlight on the stories of Black collegiates that often go unheard. Signature programming includes titles such as Beyond the Water, The Dream Whisperer, and Journeys of a Black Mathematician, all of which explore the unique experiences of HBCU students and graduates.

In tune with the evolving media landscape, HBCUWeekNOW creates fresh, modern content that resonates with today’s generation. The platform regularly hosts interviews with faculty, students, and alumni, capturing the pulse of HBCU life and its enduring influence on Black culture. Additionally, coverage of major events—including the CIAA Tournament, Bayou Classic, and HBCU Week, typically celebrated in September—further highlights the vibrancy of the HBCU community.

Expanding the HBCU Legacy

Beyond documenting history, HBCUWeekNOW is deeply invested in educating and uplifting future generations. With a steadfast commitment to preserving and promoting Black academic institutions, the platform underscores an essential truth: the influence of HBCUs cannot be confined to just one week of recognition—it’s a year-round celebration.

As project manager Christina Royster shared with I Love Us, Why wait until HBCU Week when you can have HBCUWeekNOW?”

Coming Soon: Six Days of Determination

This week, HBCUWeekNOW premieres Six Days of Determination, a powerful documentary chronicling the 1990 student protest at Morgan State University, where students demanded critical dormitory renovations from their administration. An interactive panel discussion featuring alumni and faculty will follow, offering deeper insight into this pivotal moment in HBCU history.
