Harlem is getting a little louder—and prouder—this August, as the community pays tribute to one of its most dynamic voices in hip-hop. On Saturday, August 9, 2025, the corner of 109th Street and 5th Avenue will be officially co-named “Isaac ‘Fatman Scoop’ Freeman III Place,” honoring the late Grammy Award-winning artist whose unmistakable voice helped define a generation of party anthems.

The tribute, spearheaded by the Freeman Family, NYC Council Member Dr. Yusef Salaam, and the Forever Fatman Scoop Foundation, marks a full-circle moment for a man who carried Harlem in his chest like a bassline. The community celebration is set for 2:00 PM and is open to the public.

“Scoop has always represented Harlem with pride,” said his brother Kendell “Sav” Freeman in a press release. “This co-naming is a tribute not just to his artistry, but to his ongoing commitment to uplifting the community that raised him.”

From Uptown to Global Stages

Isaac “Fatman Scoop” Freeman III was the hype man. With his booming voice, iconic ad-libs, and magnetic energy, he turned songs into cultural moments. His Grammy-winning hit “Be Faithful” remains a club staple, having resurfaced on global charts years after its release. Collaborations with talents like Missy Elliott, Mariah Carey, and Ciara cemented his status as a powerhouse whose voice could electrify a room before the beat even dropped.

Scoop’s influence didn’t stop at the mic. A proud Harlem native, he consistently gave back to his community—showing up for the same streets that shaped his sound. From youth mentoring to community outreach events, his work off-stage was as impactful as his career on it.

A Legacy Etched in Stone—and Asphalt

The street co-naming comes just over a year after Freeman’s passing, and it marks a powerful symbol of remembrance and pride. Harlem has long been a cultural mecca, producing artists whose voices shift paradigms. Now, with “Isaac ‘Fatman Scoop’ Freeman III Place,” Harlem cements Scoop’s place among its icons.

This ceremony is a community saying thank you. It’s neighbors remembering the boy from the block who made it big and never forgot home. It’s also a new generation learning that being loud, being proud, and being yourself can take you far—as long as you remember where you came from.

The Freeman family invites friends, fans, and fellow Harlemites to come out on August 9 to celebrate the life, music, and legacy of one of the neighborhood’s loudest, most beloved voices.
