In less than a month, our community has experienced a series of profound losses that have deeply affected us all. Since August 30th, we have had to say goodbye to Fatman Scoop, James Earl Jones, Rich Homie Quan, Frankie Beverly, and now Tito Jackson. Each of these figures has left an indelible mark on our lives, and their passing has left us grappling with both grief and reflection.

Death is inevitable, but the death of a celebrity really drives it home. You come into a world in which these people already exist as larger-than-life figures. Their music has always existed in your life. They’re a subconscious part of your family’s celebrations. You think of their music and smile. Their music comes to mind when you remember your first crush…or first heartbreak. You remember where you were when THAT hit dropped, whether it was a block party, your cousin’s wedding, or a basement party. You remember your prophytes clearing the floor for your line to perform its first real stroll…

And then, at the snap of a finger, they’re gone. No longer in this world to make art…leaving us with the responsibility to keep their legacies alive and share their art with the next generation.

The recent spate of deaths has left many of us feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. Jokes about checking on and bubble wrapping other elder legends abound, but there is a seriousness to this situation. Our hearts can’t take another L.

Each of these individuals brought something unique to the world. Fatman Scoop’s infectious energy and crowd-commanding performances made every event a celebration. James Earl Jones’s authoritative voice and commanding presence brought characters like Mufasa and Darth Vader to life. Rich Homie Quan’s music captured the spirit of college life for a generation. Frankie Beverly’s soulful voice and timeless hits provided a soundtrack to countless cherished moments. Tito Jackson, as a member of the iconic Jackson 5, was integral to one of the most influential musical families in history.

Beyond their artistic contributions, these individuals were also human beings with their own stories, challenges, and triumphs. Their deaths remind us that even the most celebrated among us are vulnerable to the same fate as everyone else.

As we mourn their loss, we reflect on the profound impact they had on our lives and culture. Their music, performances, and voices were more than entertainment. They helped us navigate our lives, offering joy, comfort, and celebration through their art.

Their legacies will continue to inspire and bring joy to those who experience their work. We hold the responsibility to honor their impact and ensure that their influence endures. Their artistry remains a part of our cultural heritage, and their presence will be felt through the joy and inspiration they provided.

We send heartfelt condolences to the grieving families, friends, and fans of all we have lost.
