The 2025 Luxe Derby Weekend in South Florida served Black art, looks, and community empowerment. The co-founders of I Love Us were on-site for some of the events in the four-day itinerary.

Friday’s Party Vibe

Friday evening continued the Luxe Derby experience with a VIP cocktail party at Gigi’s Music Cafe in Sunrise, Florida. This Black-owned institution, a cultural hub for over 13 years, embodies the fusion of Harlem’s rich heritage with South Florida’s unique energy. Founded by Gigi Brown, a talent manager and cultural promoter, the venue provides a sanctuary for Black creativity and expression. While I Love Us wasn’t present for this event, attendees enjoyed the venue’s ambiance and the occasion.

Saturday: Derby Day at Carousel Aventura

The highlight of the weekend was Luxe Day at the Derby at Carousel Aventura in Hallandale, Florida. This day-long celebration seamlessly blended the excitement of horse racing and betting with a display of Black fashion, delectable food, and community fellowship. The luxurious trackside terrace set the stage for a truly special event.

Attendees showcased stunning fashion, from eye-catching fascinators to tailored suits and pastel spring ensembles, each reflecting identity and pride. The venue transformed into a dynamic runway celebrating both derby traditions and contemporary Black aesthetics.

Beyond the glamour, the derby served a deeper purpose. A silent auction benefiting the South Palm Beach Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women raised funds for scholarships, mentorship, and community programs empowering young Black women. Among other items, the auction featured a wine basket from English-Brown Winery and a painting by the talented King Sunni. Sunni’s interactive live painting performance captivated the audience, turning the auction into an immersive art experience. After many bids were submitted for the piece, I Love Us got to take the piece and wine basket home.

We spoke with Shuntell Simmons and Khadiijua Riley from the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, who shared insights into their mission. Simmons emphasized the importance of financial literacy and empowerment for young Black girls, stating, “Many of them don’t have access to the tools and knowledge needed to build their financial futures, so we are here to bridge that gap.”

Josie Tucker, a Black milliner and owner of Hats by Josie, showcased her handcrafted hats, blending modern design, including bold African prints, with classic elegance.

The Derby Day masterfully balanced luxury with community engagement, to demonstrate Black excellence that encompasses style, sophistication, and a commitment to uplifting others.

Super Bowl Sunday at Aura Lounge Hollywood

The weekend culminated with a Super Bowl party at Aura Lounge Hollywood, a Black-owned cultural hotspot in Hollywood, Florida. This event provided a high-energy yet soulful atmosphere where guests enjoyed the game, Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show, and farewells to new friends. The celebration of Black excellence continued to resonate throughout the event.

Cultural Significance and Lasting Impact

Luxe Derby Weekend 2025 left a lasting impression on South Florida’s cultural and social landscape, setting a new standard for celebrating Black excellence. The event was proof that true luxury encompasses not only opulence but also resilience, innovation, and community solidarity. It redefined luxury by grounding it in cultural pride, artistic expression, and social responsibility.

The event’s impact will be felt throughout the year. Luxe Derby Weekend challenges conventional narratives, reclaims traditionally exclusive spaces, and transforms them into platforms for empowerment and celebration. We are already looking forward to next year’s event.
